In 2024, Medical Teams’ staff across Uganda responded to a year of extraordinary health challenges—marked by overlapping disease outbreaks, increasing displacement, and growing pressure on an already strained health system. The country received almost 100,000 new refugees, mainly from Sudan, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). These new arrivals, seeking safety from ongoing conflicts and instability in their home countries, brought with them increased health risks that demanded swift, coordinated responses from Medical Teams and local health authorities.

Your support in 2024 enabled our teams to deliver over 1 million primary health consultations, bring more than 31,000 babies safely into the world, and screen hundreds of thousands for malnutrition. You also helped our team respond to multiple disease outbreaks that threatened some of the region’s most vulnerable communities.

When a measles outbreak prompted immediate action in the Nakivale refugee settlement, Medical Teams launched an emergency vaccination campaign, reaching over 34,000 children. In addition, the team supported a Yellow Fever immunization campaign in northern Uganda that reached over 100,000 people. Your support helped build a shield of protection in record time.

When Mpox emerged across multiple refugee settlements, our teams responded by deploying health screeners to border points to catch cases early. Over 20 alerts were investigated and managed, keeping transmission to a minimum, with 0 deaths recorded. In another site, our teams managed 13 cholera cases without a single life lost. Even in the face of Anthrax, rapid intervention helped contain the threat.

But the work didn’t stop at treatment—your generosity helped our teams focus just as much on prevention. In high-risk border districts, screeners, doctors, and epidemiologists were deployed to support isolation units and screening teams. We trained nearly 300 community volunteers and over 290 frontline health workers to detect and report diseases early. We held community dialogues, public awareness campaigns and radio programs to help spread accurate information and reduce stigma. These efforts strengthened district-level surveillance and reinforced coordination with health authorities.

With disease outbreaks unfolding alongside existing demands for daily health services, your support empowered our teams in Uganda to be prepared, not just to respond. Thank you for helping ensure that infectious diseases didn’t just stop at the clinic door—they were intercepted before they could spread across borders and through communities.
